Multiprocessing

Saturday 16 July 2011

Some computers are designed to distribute their work across multiple processors in a multiprocessor configuration, a technique used only once on the large and powerful computers such as supercomputers, mainframes and servers. Multiprocessor and multi-core (multiple CPUs on a single integrated circuit) personal computers and laptops are now widely available and are increasingly used in the lower end of the market accordingly.

Supercomputers in particular often have highly unique architectures that differ significantly from the basic architecture of the recording software and a general purpose computers. They often feature thousands of CPUs, customized high-speed interconnects, and specializes in computer equipment. These models are generally useful only for specialized tasks due to an extensive program of organization is required to successfully use most of the available resources at a time. Supercomputers are used to seeing the use of large-scale simulation, graphics rendering, and cryptography applications, as well as with other so-called "embarrassingly parallel" tasks.
